Tanzania Alliance for Biodiversity (TABIO)

The Tanzania Alliance for Biodiversity (TABIO) is a coalition of civil society and private sector organizations working to conserve agricultural biodiversity and promote sustainable food systems in Tanzania. Established in 2011 and officially registered in 2016, TABIO advocates for ecological farming practices, seed sovereignty, and the protection of indigenous knowledge. The alliance brings together grassroots organizations, researchers, and policy actors to support agroecology, sustainable seed systems, and the rights of smallholder farmers. TABIO’s vision is to ensure food sovereignty and resilient agricultural systems that protect biodiversity and support the well-being of Tanzanian communities.
Through its programs and partnerships, TABIO engages in public awareness, policy advocacy, capacity building, and community-based projects that enhance the conservation and use of local seed varieties. It works closely with farmers to strengthen farmer-managed seed systems and promotes the use of organic and traditional farming methods. TABIO also plays a key role in influencing national agricultural policies to favor biodiversity and sustainability, collaborating with institutions such as the National Plant Genetic Resource Centre (NPGRC) and international partners like Swissaid. With its coordinated network, TABIO continues to be a vital force in shaping Tanzania’s path toward ecological and resilient food systems.
