ECHO East Africa Seed Bank
One of the seed banks in the ECHO Regional Impact Centers established in Tanzania in 2014, it has a cold room run by cool bolt technology. It has over 800 accessions of green manure/cover crops, fodder, legumes and pulses, vegetables, grains, and integrated pest management species.
Our goal is to serve as a resource for collections of difficult-to-find, underutilized crops and seeds that thrive in difficult conditions worldwide, mostly in Africa. We aim to strengthen and build the capacity of the seed banking network.
We serve those who wish to experiment with underutilized crops as they work to improve the lives of small-scale farmers and gardeners. These often include development workers, Non-Governmental Organizations, Churches/missionaries, and Universities/schools.
We offer seed packets to network partners (10 free trial packets each year), tailor-made Seed saving/ seed bank management training, open-pollinated seeds / Farmer managed seeds that can be saved, seed saving options for community seed banks and a learning tour at ECHO EA seed bank.
We believe our seed strategy works because we promote seeds that are sustainable, adaptable, accessible, and underutilized!
